Home solar panel installation costs

For homeowners looking to lower their energy bills, a solar PV system generally ranges from £4,000 to £8,500, depending on your property’s size and the type of installation you choose. Installation costs are included in the total project estimate, but we’re happy to provide a detailed breakdown if requested.

"On average, homeowners recoup the cost of their solar panels within 5 to 8 years and can increase their property’s value by more than 25% of the system’s purchase price."

For most residential projects, we recommend all-black panels for their sleek, modern look that blends seamlessly with your home’s design and enhances its curb appeal.

At ZNS Construction, we exclusively supply Bloomberg Tier 1 solar panels—produced by top-tier manufacturers known for their strong financial standing, innovation, and commitment to quality. These panels are built to last, ensuring long-term reliability and peace of mind.

How many solar panels do I need?

The number of solar panels required for a property depends on several factors, including the type of house, the number of occupants, and the number of bedrooms. Additional considerations, such as the heating system, air conditioning, electric vehicle chargers, and whether someone works from home, can also impact the total number of panels needed.

Below is a chart illustrating the estimated number of solar panels required based on house type, number of bedrooms, and electricity offset. The associated costs are also provided. Please note that the figures in this chart are estimates and may vary depending on specific circumstances.

House type Number of bedrooms Number of solar panels Electricity offset Cost (excluding batteries)
Terraced 2–3 6–8 To offset 2500kWh From £4,500
Semi-detached 3 8–10 To offset 3000kWh From £5,000
Detached 3 10–12 To offset 3500kWh From £6,000
Detached 4 12–14 To offset 4000kWh From £6,500
Detached 5+ 15+ In excess of 4000kWh From £7,000

Combine solar panels with a battery storage

Integrating a battery storage solution with your solar PV system is an excellent way to boost the benefits of solar energy for your home. By storing the energy generated by your panels, you can better manage and control your energy consumption. This system ensures you always have access to affordable, clean energy, regardless of external factors or seasonal changes. With many homeowners experiencing higher energy needs in the afternoon and evening, having stored energy readily available offers significant advantages, especially during peak usage times.

Charge your EV from home

Electric vehicle technology is constantly evolving, especially in terms of battery capacity, making it an increasingly attractive option for drivers. As more people transition to electric vehicles to reduce their carbon footprint, having the ability to charge your car at home using surplus solar energy is a smart way to keep your transportation both cost-effective and emissions-free. By installing an electric vehicle charging point, you can take advantage of free, clean energy for your vehicle, further enhancing the sustainability of your home.

Installation time

ZNS Construction typically completes your domestic solar panel installation, allowing you to start generating solar power immediately.

Your installation team will consist of up to four technicians, including a site manager who will serve as your main point of contact throughout the installation process.

The team will include skilled roofers, who will be responsible for installing the solar PV panels, as well as experienced electricians who will manage the interior electrical work, including mounting and configuring the inverter.

Warranty & maintenance

Warranty periods for solar panels and inverters can vary based on the manufacturer and the specific product. However, all of our solar panel installations come with a standard two-year warranty, covering all types of installations.

Once your solar panels are installed, they require minimal maintenance, apart from periodic check-ups to ensure the system is functioning efficiently. About 11 months after installation, one of our trusted team members will reach out to confirm your satisfaction and offer a service appointment. During this service, we will use a drone to inspect your panels and advise you if cleaning is necessary.

"They were absolutely brilliant, spot on." We handled an extension, garden work, tiling, kitchen renovations, bi-folding door glazing, and underfloor heating installation.

London Customer

Solar battery storage plays a crucial role in optimizing the efficiency of solar panels for residential energy use. During the day, solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into electricity, with any surplus energy stored in a solar battery for later use. This stored energy becomes a valuable resource, providing power after sunset or on cloudy days, ensuring a reliable energy supply without the need to rely on the grid.

By combining solar panels with battery storage, homeowners can optimize their energy consumption, reducing reliance on grid power and often achieving significant cost savings compared to exporting surplus energy. This integrated approach enhances energy efficiency and leads to substantial savings on electricity bills, making the combination of solar panels and batteries a highly effective and economical solution for sustainable residential energy use.

Monitoring

With your installation, you’ll have access to an online monitoring system that provides real-time data, metrics, and detailed reports, giving you full control and insight into the performance of your system at all times.

Your monitoring platform will keep you connected to your solar PV system, helping you develop better energy habits by providing insights into your system’s performance. It will also alert you to any potential issues, while inspiring you to explore additional energy-saving upgrades for your home.

With solar monitoring, you can maximize the performance of your system, ensuring it operates at its best and empowering you to take control of your energy usage every day.

Benefits

Maximise your savings

At any time, you can check exactly how much electricity your solar panels are generating, allowing you to plan your energy usage when production is at its peak. By using the monitoring system in this way, you can reduce your reliance on the grid and lower your energy bills. It also helps you track the return on your investment, giving you visibility into how quickly you're paying back your system.

Battery, EV and grid integrations

If you have battery storage or EV chargers, your portal will also provide insights into how these technologies are working together. This enables you to optimize your home energy system, taking full advantage of preferential tariffs and maximizing solar energy generation for cost savings.

See your environmental impact

Your app will also report the positive impact your system has had on the environment. Depending on the type of system installed, this could be displayed as carbon savings or an equivalent "offset," such as the number of trees planted, giving you a tangible sense of your contribution to sustainability.

Get ahead of problems

By accessing historical data, your monitoring system can alert you to emerging issues, such as shading or gradual panel degradation that may occur as your system ages. It will also flag problems like inverter faults. Should any issues arise, our dedicated Operations & Maintenance team is available to provide support and ensure your system continues to operate at its best.

Home solar power FAQs

Can I move my solar panels to another house?
You don’t typically need planning permission for home solar PV systems, unless you have a flat roof or your property is a listed building or in a conservation area.
Grants for solar are very few and far between because solar panels offer such a good return on investment. The financial benefits of solar PV are enough on their own to warrant the original cost and are therefore not seen as something that needs incentivising.  There are currently no national grants available, but there may be a local authority scheme in place where you live. The best place to start is your local council’s website or helpline.
Yes, you could uninstall your solar PV system and reinstall it at a new house, but we wouldn’t advise that you do this. Your system will be adding value to the original property that will be lost if you move it, you will need to inform the DNO of the move and ask permission to reinstall and the cost involved to uninstall and reinstall your system would most likely be better invested in a new system for the other property.
A long-term investment, residential solar panels have a 25-year guarantee and can continue generating electricity for up to 30 years or more.
Yes, if you install solar panels on your property then your electricity supplier will need to be notified. This is so they can measure your electricity usage  correctly. You will also need permission from your DNO (District Network Operator).
Solar panels are typically mounted to a rail system, which is fixed to your roof. Your solar PV system is specifically designed to maintain the strength and integrity of the roof, while also staying watertight, so you don’t need to worry about damage.
The Smart Export Guarantee is a scheme that enables you to sell any surplus energy your solar panels produce back to the grid. When your solar PV system is installed you will need to have a smart meter installed at the same time. Once your system is commissioned, you can investigate the current SEG rates being offered and apply to any SEG scheme. Your SEG provider does not have to be your electricity provider. Export rates vary and we’d advise a potential customer to do their research and get the best rate.
